First Aid - Preparing a First Aid Kit

We never know when disaster will strike, so the best course of action is to prepare. Every household should keep a first aid kit.

What to put in a first aid kit

  • Adhesive Bandages (different sizes)

  • Roller Bandages (different sizes)

  • Triangular Bandage

  • Sterile Gauze Pads

  • Absorbent Compress Dressing

  • Adhesive Cloth Tape

  • Hydrocortisone Ointment Packs

  • Antibiotic Ointment Packs

  • Antiseptic

  • Aspirin

  • Alcohol

  • Cotton Balls

  • Mask

  • Instant Cold Press

  • Thermometer

  • Space Blanket

  • Scissors and Tweezers

  • Nonlatex Gloves

Adhesive bandages- are thin textile strips that adhere to skin to protect wound or scab.

Roller bandages- used to immobilize injured body parts, provide pressure to control internal or external bleeding, absorb drainage, and secure dressings.

Triangular bandage- versatile bandages, which can be used for a variety of purposes in first aid.

Sterile gauze pads- applied to wounds to lessen bleeding and improve clotting.

Absorbent compress dressing- super absorbent wound dressings designed to treat highly exuding wounds and protect them from exposure to the environment.

Adhesive cloth tape- adhesive tape made with a cloth backing to make it durable and flexible.

Hydrocortisone Ointment Packs- is a steroid that is used to treat inflammation and itching caused by skin conditions that respond to steroid medication.

Antibiotics ointment packs- This medication is used to prevent and treat minor skin infections caused by small cuts, scrapes, or burns.

Antiseptic- chemical substances that when applied topically onto intact skin, mucous membranes or wounds partially or completely reduce the population of living microorganisms in those tissues.

Aspirin- prototype analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drug

Alcohol- a natural bactericidal treatment, this means it kills bacteria but doesn’t necessarily prevent their growth.

Cotton balls- essential in any first aid kit, to rapidly apply disinfectant to any scratches or wounds.

Mask- used when giving CPR to protect from infection, and, in some cases, improve the quality of rescue breaths.

Instant Cold Press- reduces localized inflammation and swelling. Thermometer- used to measure body temperature.

Space Blankets- aluminum film blanket and are typically used to treat shock or hypothermia by retaining body warmth and preventing heat loss.

Scissors and Tweezers- to cut a bandage or remove foreign material

Nonlatex Gloves- an added barrier against infection in a first aid situation.
