Mini Earthquake Demonstration

Here's a fun way to simulate an earthquake— all you need is a few materials and you'll have yourself a simulator that can double as a snack! Here's what you'll need:

  • Gelatin

  • Big Pan (at least 8in × 8in)

  • Marshmallows

  • Toothpicks

Instructions:

  1. Prepare a large pan filled with gelatin. Make sure the gelatin is firm to keep it sturdy once the simulation starts.

  2. Using the toothpicks and marshmallows, start building up an infrastructure. Poke the toothpicks into the gelatin for a strong base. In building up, use the marshmallows as joints for the toothpicks. You can make it as tall and as big, and even as pretty as you want, and test out different techniques to keep it intact once shaken. It's recommended to start at two floors first.

  3. Once you're done with your building, take the pan and shake it gently side to side to simulate an earthquake.

  4. Feel free to change up and redo your work. Have fun!
